Who is SciSoc?
The Cambridge University Scientific Society was founded in 1995 with the goal of promoting all branches of science at a level both stimulating to those studying science, and accessible to those with an arts background. Today, SciSoc is the most active science society at Cambridge, and with more than 1000 permanent members, the largest. Those interested in our activity should sign up for our society mailing list to receive notification on upcoming lectures and other events.
The society is honoured to be accredited by the distinguished scientists that are our patrons - Sir Michael Atiyah, Professor Antony Hewish, Sir Aaron Klug, Professor Salvador Moncada and Professor Heinz Wolff.
What do you do?
Our main activity is the organisation of weekly talks that cover all scientific branches, from physics to medicine, from biology to engineering. We attract guest speakers of the highest calibre, and had lectures held by Roger Penrose, Simon Singh, Sir Tim Hunt, Neil Turok and many, many more. Often, our events include wine receptions, which offer a great opportunity to discuss the talk with other members, and to have a chat with the speaker. For upcoming events check our events page.
In addition, we run a number of social events thoughout the year, like the glamorous Annual Founders' Dinner, the fun Science Societies' Garden Party, and trips to scientific wonders, like CERN in 2008.
Do I have to join to come to your events?
All SciSoc events are open to everyone, and you don't need to be a member to come - just turn up when you like! A life membership brings you a number of benefits, though, including free entry to all talks, reduced ticket prices for our social events, and priority entry should we run out of seats (more...).
How can I get involved?
SciSoc is run in joint by its Executive Committee and its General Committee. We are fully student run, and our stance as the biggest science society at Cambridge is the fruit of many years of work by enthusiastic committee members. Working in SciSoc is incredibly rewarding, and teaches you a lot as you go along.
Any member can apply to the president to join the General Committee, and may campaign to enter the Executive Committee. If you are interested, the best way to find out more is to email Anja and Valentijn, our presidents, using the Contact Form. They will also be happy to hear your questions, complaints, problems, suggestions, and praises.
We are interested in sponsoring SciSoc. Who can we get in touch with?
Our Director for Sponsorship, Zsigmond Varga, will be delighted to discuss the possible options of potential sponsorship with you. SciSoc has a long tradition of excellent collaboration with its sponsors, as is reflected by the fact that most of our current sponsors have been supporting us for many years. Zsigmond may be contacted via the Contact Form, and will get back to you quickly.
Who can I contact if I have more questions?
Every member of the Executive Committee will be happy to answer all of your questions. For enquiries, please use the Contact Form.
All SciSoc events are open to everyone - you don't necessarily have to be a member! (Membership will give you some benefits though...)
